The attribution of antisemitism to religious animosity is a gross distortion of the situation. It is precisely among the freethinkers that the most decided antisemites are found. (Giordano Bruno, Voltaire, Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Johannes Scherr, Dühring etc.) Cf. page 37, 40 et seq.
As the name already says, antisemitism is directed against the "Semites," that is, against a race, not against a religion. If the antisemites were fighting the religion of the Jews, they would have to call themselves "Anti-Israelites." It therefore betrays a poor understanding of language when someone connects antisemitism with "religion."
Moreover, this falsification of the concept is intentionally cultivated by certain parties, in order to deceive the people about the true nature of the Jewish question.
3) But were not the Jews persecuted in the Middle Ages for their religion?
That too is not correct. The cause of the popular rage against the Jews in the Middle Ages, as in all times, was — Jewish usury and the exploitation of all classes of the people through Jewish intrigues and schemes. Numerous complaints, which were then directed by the citizenry of various cities to the governments and are still available today in their exact wording

— 4 — Die Zurückführung des Antisemitismus auf religiöse Gehässigkeit ist eine grobe Entstellung der Sachlage. Gerade unter den Freigeistem finden sich die entschiedensten Antisemiten. (Giordano Bruno, Voltaire, Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Johannes Scherr, Dühnng u. s. w.) Vergl. Seite 37, 40 u. flg. Wie schon der Name sagt, nchtet sich der Antisemitismus gegen die „Semiten“, also gegen eine Nasse, nicht gegen eine Religion. Wenn die Antisemiten die Religion der Juden bekämpften, so müßten sie sich „Anti-Israeliten“ nennen. Es verräth also ein gennges Sprach-Verständniß, wenn Jemand den Antisemitismus mit der „Religion“ in Zusammenhang bnngt. Im Uebngen aber wird diese Begnffs-Fälschung von gewisser Seite absichtlich gepflegt, um das Volk über das wahre Wesen der Judenfrage zu täuschen. — 3) Hat man aber nicht im Mittelalter die Juden ihrer Religion wegen verfolgt? Auch das ist nicht zutreffend. Die Ursache der Volks-Wuth gegen die Juden im Mittelalter, wie zu allen Zeiten, war — der jüdische Wucher und die Ausbeutung aller Volks-Klassen durch jüdische Ränke und Schliche. Zahlreiche Beschwerden, die damals von der Bürgerschaft verschiedener Städte an die Regierungen genchtet wurden und heute noch im Wortlaut
