thinks one is reading the chronicles of the Babylonian Jews.
Conspiracies and rebellions of the Jews occur several times, and even in all the wars which the Poles waged for their independence, the Jews played no minor role.
Casimir the Great, upon whom a beautiful Jewish mistress exerted great influence, ordered the legal status of the Jews in a way that was apparently very advantageous for them.
He gave them a privileged jurisdiction: the court of the Voivode (governor) for their disputes with non-Jews, their own courts for disputes with their fellow tribesmen; he exempted them from all state burdens, such as the provision of troops, etc., and legally removed them from all power and arbitrariness of the landlords.
Nevertheless, this power and arbitrariness have always been exercised upon them with the greatest despotism, and it has been established by custom that the nobleman proceeds with the Jews living on his territory according to his bon plaisir.
