Formerly, the Jews were also the sole lessees of the tolls, the mines, and the salt works of Poland. The Austrian government has now changed this in Galicia. Yet even it cannot yet completely fend them off, and so the road and bridge tolls and also the lease for spirits are still usually in the hands of the Jews.
Every Polish nobleman has in his house, and also in the cities he frequents, his so-called Jewish man of affairs, who follows him like his shadow at every step, and without whom he believes himself as little able to stir and move as without arms and legs. Everything here is so filled with the Jewish element that no one can get to another without the mediation of a Jew.
A detailed analysis of the national character of the Poles and the Jews would clearly show how uncommonly suited both were to establish this intimate fraternization which they entered into with one another.
The Jew is dirty, the Pole is too and therefore takes no offense at it; the Pole is impetuous and quick-tempered, the Jew patient and tame; the Pole, however, is also magnanimous and prodigal, and no one knows better than the Jew how to take advantage of these qualities; the Pole does not know how to calculate, the Jew can do it excellently; the Pole lives for the day and knows not

— 118 — Ehemals waren die Juden auch die einzigen Pächter der Zölle, der Bergwerke und der Salinen Polens. Die österreichische Regierung hat dies jetzt in Galizien geändert. Doch kann selbst sie sich ihrer noch nicht völlig erwehren, und so sind denn die Weg- und Brückenzölle und ebenso auch der Brannt- weins-Pacht noch jetzt gewöhnlich in den Händen der Juden. Jeder polnische Edelmann hat in seinem Hause und ebenso in den Städten, welche er zu besuchen pflegt, seinen sogenannten jüdischen FaciendenMacher, der ihm wie sein Schatten auf Schntt und Tntt folgt, und ohne welchen er sich so wenig regen und bewegen zu können glaubt, wie ohne Arme und Beine. Alles ist hier so mit dem jüdischen Elemente gefüllt, daß nicht Einer zum Anderen kommen kann, ohne Vermittelung eines Juden. Eine detaillirte Zergliederung des NationalCharakters der Polen und der Juden würde deutlich zeigen, wie ungemein geschickt beide wären, diese innige Verschwisterung, welche sie miteinander eingingen, zu begründen. Der Jude ist schmuzig, der Pole ist es auch und nimmt daher keinen Anstoß daran; der Pole ist aufbrausend und rasch, der Jude geduldig und zahm; der Pole ist dabei aber großmüthig und verschwendensch, keiner besser als der Jude weiß von diesen Eigenschaften Vortheil zu ziehen; der Pole versteht nicht zu rechnen, der Jude kann es vortrefflich; der Pole lebt in den Tag hinein und weiß sich
